History

The original Shawnee Chief Motel was built in 1958 by the current owner's parents.  Additions were made in 1961 and 1963.  In 1998, the building was remodeled and eight rental rooms were converted into four efficiencies with kitchens.

The unit now consists of nineteen  rental rooms (9singles, 8 doubles, and 2 triples) and five efficiencies with kitchens.  The building is still family-owned and operated.

The motel is located in Southern Illinois, in Shawneetown.  Shawneetown is located on Illinois Route 13, three miles from the Ohio River and is the gateway to the Shawnee National Forest.

 

Two story section houses 5 efficiencies, 9 double bed rooms, and 2 triple bed rooms.

 

The one story section houses managers office and apartment, and 9 single rooms.

 

The 8 double rooms contain two full size beds.

The 9 single rooms contain 1 queen size bed.

 

Renovations

In 1998, the motel under went major renovations.  Not only were 8 rental rooms turned into 4 efficiencies, but all other rooms had some type of remodeling done.

  • At least 50% of rooms have new carpet and draperies

  • Most all toilets and lavatories have been replaced

  • All new bedspreads

  • Most new lamps

  • New televisions and telephones

  • All rooms repainted

  • New roof in 1998

  • New hot water heaters

  • New air conditioners/heaters

  • Parking lot repaved in July 2000

We are constantly working to make your stay more pleasant.  Cleanliness and Customer Service are our main priorities.

Area Attractions

 

This is a picture of Camel Rock located at the Garden of the Gods.  Here you can explore the rock formations, cliffs, and trails of the most visited sites in the Shawnee National Forest.  Garden of the Gods is located on Karbers Ridge road, approximately 17 miles from Shawneetown.

 
This is a picture of the cave at Cave-In-Rock State Park.
Wander along the Ohio River and step into the large cavern, steeped in river pirate history.  Enjoy the spectacular river view from the lodge perched atop 
the overhanging bluffs.  Cave-In-Rock is located at the most southern point of Illinois Route 1, approximately 25 miles from Shawneetown.
